Holy questions are those questions asked to figure things out. To such questions there are no boundaries, no areas off limits, no regions that cannot be reached through holy study. [And] to do the work of study, you must make an especially stubborn effort to think clearly. - Dr. Richard Swanson

Alcohol?
Lol. Perhaps that IS the answer! Although, given my drinking habits, I don't think I'd drink enough to get me to that point...
The "Eastern" way of dealing with them is to acceph them as part of you.
You transmute your fear and pride from negative qualities into positives by seeing them as your gifts and as necessary for you to be who you are.
When you can start becoming aware of them whenever those things happen to you and start accepting them as who you are, they will either drop away on their own or not affect you much.
There is based on Jungian school of thought, also Eastern religions talk about this approach as well.
You can never eliminate your negative qualities by fighting against them or by pushing them away. (Repression never works). That's because there is no negative qualities. There is only your perception. Negative qualities are actually positive when you see them under a different light or through a different lens. We tend to see parts of ourselves we don't like as negative because of social reasons and because we don't have access to the big picture. But negatives are secretly positive, and they are all just part of a process.
- well, you know who. :)
